Recommended Tools for Computers

Anti-Virus:

Every computer that connects to the Internet should have anti-virus software. Viruses are spread through the Internet and can slow down your computer, steal personal data from your computer, and delete or corrupt personal files.

We recommend Avast, which can be obtained for free at www.avast.com.

SpyWare Removal:

Spyware is content that is downloaded onto your computer through the Internet that spies on everything you do through your computer and can steal personal data. It is typically used for the purpose of direct marketing. Spyware often runs unwanted programs and can slow down your computer’s operation.

Spyware removal software will identify and remove any spyware that’s been put on your computer. It’s important to be careful with spyware removal programs as some of them will remove all of the existing spyware but add their own.

Alternative to MicroSoft Office:

Open Office is open source (free) software that is comparable to Microsoft Office. It includes word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software. Open Office will read Microsoft Office documents and will also save to Microsoft Office formats. This software can be downloaded for free at www.openoffice.org.

CD/DVD Burning Software:

If you have a CD/DVD burner you can use CD/DVD burning software to create music CDs or DVDs that can be played on your DVD player. InfraRecorder is a free option that is very straightforward and easy to use. You can get it at www.infrarecorder.org.

To the Rescue

This winter Little Apple Technologies brought service to Smith Creek, a rural area north of Wilsall. The cell phone service that was their only form of phone service was being discontinued, and the residents were faced with no telecommunication capability. This is an unsettling proposition in such a remote area. Many pleas were made to the cell phone company and through state representatives to keep service available, but on December 1 the service was cancelled. It would have cost approximately $70,000 to bring telephone lines into the area, which was an overwhelming investment for a community of approximately 30 residences.

With our wireless service, Little Apple Technologies was able to bring high-speed Internet and MontanaVoice telephone service to this community for a fraction of that cost. The residents gained quality high-speed Internet service, which they’ve also never had, as well as telephone service. LAT’s technicians braved negative temperatures to install the necessary tower equipment and premise equipment so that the residents would have phone before the Christmas holiday, which they did!
